"Isn't it strange the way the wind makes inanimate objects move?"
— Gustave Meyrink, The Golem
Our lives are increasingly entangled with ubiquitous, 'smart' technical systems. Yet they can feel strangely autonomous, even slightly alien: an apparatus seems to possess a will of its own, or an unseen intelligence appears to be watching.
Drawing on Mark Fisher’s writings in The Weird and the Eerie, <MACHINES_00> invites emerging media artists, creative technologists and computational designers to make and exhibit hardware artifacts exploring hauntology, possession, high weirdness, and the unsettling edge between the living and non-living.
The open call requires that applicants understand the following:
1. This is an exhibition requiring the building of hardware technical systems.
2. The space is extremely limited to small, interactive artifacts.
3. While there is flexibility regarding the overall complexity of the final artifact, the open call is not interested in purely craft/found object work.
4. Only interactive systems will be accepted.
5. This is not an open call for professional media artists, creative technologists or computational designers with 3+ years of experience and/or significant achievements.
6. The final decision of acceptance rests on the curation team regarding appropriateness of project to the call details.
7. There will be a limit of only 6 exhibitors as it is the first open call.
8. Basic power and display technology will be provided, but the fidelity of final work rests on the exhibitor.
9. Preference will be given to residents from Bangalore or nearby cities due to ease of logistics.
